Mine lasted a little over a year March 10, 2010 KennyG (Santa Monica, CA United States) Please keep in mind that most reviews here are written right after the items are purchased.
I've had my BASS1200 for a little over a year. For what it is -- a low-profile subwoofer meant to fit in very tight spaces -- I would consider the performance satisfactory; when it works correctly, that is. I found the unit to sound a bit boomy at around 90 to 120 Hz, but I'm not sure if that had to do with the interior volume of my car, a Mazda 3 sedan. It fit perfectly beneath the passenger seat.
Right around the 13th month, my unit began to produce crackling/popping noises, which persisted even after I unplugged the input line. In addition to the weird noises, I noticed that the quality of the bass became less punchy, and the frequency response became extremely uneven. From that, I gathered that the fault lied within the driver circuit instead of the actual subwoofer (i.e. speaker portion). I promptly returned the unit to Boss Audio for warranty repair, which cost me $15 plus another $15 to ship it out to them. About a week and a half later, I received the unit back with a sticker indicating that no problems were found. Arghhh!! How about a phone call or email to ask me about the exact symptoms?! So now I'm out $30 for NOTHING.
With all that said, I try to keep in perspective the original purchase price and slim profile. If you're lacking space in your car; want something to last you about a year (maybe more); and are not an audiophile, then it might make sense to plop down $100 for one of these. Otherwise, I'd look for a better long-term investment, though it might require more space. I will never buy -- nor recommend -- a Boss product again. The lack of customer service killed the deal for me. My plan now is to tear the sucker apart myself, as I'm quite savvy with electrical/electronics stuff. I hope you have a better experience.
sounds good when it stays on March 6, 2010 jamie olthoff (GREENWOOD, IN, US) I had the unit professionally installed into a jeep patriot. It fits great under the seat. I have It hooked up to the factory stereo using the high level input. It sounds great when it works, but the unit shuts off after about 10 min. If I power the stereo off for a couple seconds it will work for about another 10 min and so on. This is my second unit and I am taking it back to the installer today to try to fix. Its been a bit of a hassle, but if I can just get to work properly I would be perfectly satisfied.
Order from a good seller! February 23, 2010 Thomas L. Simpson (Phoenix) I love this amp/sub and you can't beat it for the price and ease of installation. Just beware that I've ordered 4 of these things and 2 of them were defective from the get go. As long as you order from a good seller who is willing to exchange out any bad ones, you're good to go.
No, it isn't going to rattle your windows, it just lets you know those low bass beats are there so you can hear the entire song.
LOVE IT!!!!!! February 21, 2010 David (Estero, Florida) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can't believe what some people say about this speaker. It's amazing! Fits perfect under my dodge ram passenger seat and provides plenty of bass throughout my whole cab. I don't regret this purchase at all!
Just what I needed for my Honda Civic February 15, 2010 Chaditude (Alviso, CA) I've got an after-market Sony CDX-GT630UI deck, four 6 1/2" infinity speakers, powered with 75 watts apiece from an Alpine REF475A amp. I thought I'd have everything I'd need for my little civic coupe, but to get the bass I wanted, I had to crank the entire system too loud. Since space is an issue in a small car, I was looking exclusively for a powered sub, and nearly pulled the trigger on the Infinity Basslink, which is a bit bulkier. When I saw the BASS1200 on sale, I figured I'd give it a shot and come back to the Basslink if it didn't at least bring up some of the bottom end for me.
I was hopeful, but ready for disappointment. WOW. This little box KICKS. I've had it a week, and haven't had it distort or clip. I left it pretty much at factory setting, and it has been an all around powerhouse for all of my music. I'm more of the Doors, Nirvana, Talking Heads sort of ilk, and I don't demand my sound system to travel the entire intersection at a light, but I do like it somewhat loud. Gave it the Soundgarden test, (which has a bit more heavy bass than most bands) and at all volumes it sounds unbelievable.
I could tell my friend was jealous when he heard it - he has a huge setup that takes over 1/4 of his trunk - that all that bass was coming out of the little box mounted to the back of my seat. I'm sure most folks can easily mount it under the seat, but my civic seats only have about 1" clearance in one spot that makes it impossible for this (or any other) unit to fit there.
I bought the connection kit, and had it up and running for a test in about half an hour. Mounting and running the wires took some more time, but with the money you save on this unit, you might consider having it installed if you're not the handy type.
Happy Thumping.
